Carlos and Julie Batres are fifth-generation stewards of Montecarlos Estate, a 500-hectare coffee farm in Apaneca, El Salvador, farmed continuously since 1870. Montecarlos is credited as the first estate in the world to develop the Pacamara variety, working with material from El Salvador's National Coffee Laboratory to cross Pacas and Maragogype. The farm produces Catuaí, Caturra, Bourbon, Pacamara, and Geisha across rich volcanic soil on the slopes of an extinct volcanic cone.
