Long Miles Coffee Project was founded in 2011 by Ben and Kristy Carlson in the Kayanza region of Burundi, beginning with a single washing station and growing to three stations working with over 5,000 smallholder farmers across 40 unique hills. The project exports specialty washed, natural, anaerobic honey, and anaerobic natural lots primarily from Bourbon variety farmers at high altitudes in Kayanza and Muramvya provinces, and operates on a direct-relationship model that pays premiums and annual bonuses to farming families. Long Miles is widely credited with raising the international profile of Burundian specialty coffee.
